HELP HD question.?

On Jan. 25th we upgraded to HD Dish….can you tell me why on regular channels the picture is smaller than the size of the tv…on the channels that are suppose to be HD the picture covers the whole screen….Is there some setting that needs to be done or what is the deal? It is a brand new tv 61" Samsung DLP LED tv…the picture is now smaller on regular channels. We have it hooked up with an HDMI cable.
I did what you said and the same size..I think it is the tv..it is set at 16 x 9. 1080i. The only other thing is shows is like 1-4 x 6 and the 2-4×6…
The Dish guy said some customer said it was suppose to be set like that…so he actually went in and changed it to 1080i…I watched him set it before he showed me how it will look…Will the picture be just as good with it set like that? It is a wonderful picture now. I guess I really don’t know what the 1080i, 1080p and all of that means.

BUT…….

They’re shortcuts…that means you have to press the star button on each and EVERY Low Def channel you watch…..

You want it to stretch ALL shows permanently???

Of course you do….

So, go into the Menu, select the SETUP mode
Find the Aspect Ratio or the VIDEO OUTPUT selection
Go into that, and you will find an HD and a SD selection……
The SD selection is also known as 4:3……
Select it and set it for 4:3 STRETCH –no 4:3 ZOOM, no 4:3 STANDARD……

4:3 STRETCH…..

Now all your 4:3 pictures will AUTOMATICALLY stretch the picture to fill the screen…..

I don’t know why the HD Dish installers set it up that way but they do….and I have to come in after them and fix it…..

    High Definition programming is shot in 16 x 9 Widescreen. Your standard programming is not, you probably have two black bars on each side of the picture. Now, you can make it so that it fills the whole screen, but what it will end up doing, is stretching the picture and the picture will be somewhat distorted. Go to the settings on your dish receiver, under display or HD settings, there should be something that says "native display." More than likely that is checked, meaning that the shows are shown in the ratio that they’re filmed. If you uncheck that or turn that off, it will let you stretch the picture to fill the whole screen. You might also see something that says "Aspect Ratio" and there will be a few different options in there that you can try out and just choose the best one you like. I think on DISH remotes there’s like a star * button that does this without going through the menus, but I’m not sure. Let me know if you have any questions. :)

    We had the same problem. On the remote push the * button. You can also press menu 6->8 and adjust the aspect ratio. The * button is much easier.

    On your Dish settings, you have to adjust the resolution for 480p to 4:3 stretch (so non-HD channels will stretch to fit screen).
