1080P is the highest resolution available for TVs now.Contrast ratio will give you a sharp picture e.g. 20,000 :1 or 50,000 :1 the higher the number for this the brighter the colors will be and the darks will be great instead of looking milky gray color. Now the new LED TVs the contrast ratio on some are in the millions 1,000,000 :1 a few are higher and the picture is just awesome, they have traits of LCD in not having to worry about burn in,and they have Plasma traits with the contrast ratio being high so they have the best of both worlds I would say.But the new LED TVs cost a pretty penny,so I would say some new Plasma are worth looking at but those require some care in keeping the picture looking great, they have a feature that gets rid of picture retention(burn in) that should be used regularly to keep picture retention down. For LCD you will be fine in the 20,000 :1 or higher for the contrast ratio, also make sure the response time is 8 milliseconds or less so you won't get a spacey effect on fast action movies.
