What’s an LED TV? Can you save money simply by buying the right TV? LCD TV backlighting is a complex subject, and the marketing of different TVs to make them stand out on at your local electronics store is often designed to confuse you further! In this episode we look at LCD backlighting from the CCFL to the RGB-LED and explain what to look for… and what you should be spending your money on!

I have a Magnavox … I have a Magnavox 26″ LCD TV the first original LCD’s before HDMI came out. I have it for 3 years now. Hook it up to my PS3 with component. Wish I could of waited for LCD OR LED’s to make my PC and PS3 looks better on HD. Guess I have to wait for the best TV so I can give away my old thick LCD.
Theres to much hype … Theres to much hype on led, but most LCD tv solds are still conventional LCD. i don´t understand why sony still only makes S-PVA panels tough… the hue-shift annoys me too much, i don´t really care for black level, but i do care for quality acurancy wich a S-PVA panel doesn´t have much.
How long does an … How long does an Average LCD monitor last?
I bought a 24″ Acer. and I am hoping it lasts a very long time as its quite an expensive item. The Acer is CCFL I am thinking, if I were to replace the CCFL after its blown is it a difficult thing to do?
I heard LED back light lasts 10 times longer than CCFL is this true?
I’ve seen an OLED ( … I’ve seen an OLED (the XEL-1) and it looks amazing, there’s no way i’m going to buy screens until OLED gets cheaper (and bigger than 11″)
Samsung TVs are LCD … Samsung TVs are LCD TVs with LED-back (or edge) lighting, like Sony. Obviously I’d recommend a Sony… but you should use your eyes to judge. It’s worth noting that, for pure picture quality, you’ll get a better deal from a CCFL LCD TV unless you’re buying TVs like the Sony X-series (with RGB LED backlighting and local dimming).
No extra maintenance required… I wouldn’t worry about life-span, I’m afraid any TV you buy now will likely be obsolete in 25 years, even if it is still working!
Is the series 6 Samsung UN40B6000 40″ LED a true LED or no? How do I tell from looking at the specs? What do you think of that TV – or would you recommend something else? What would you recommend for picture quality?
What about maintenance? Any necessary calibrations or other maintenance I need to know of before purchasing an LED TV?
I always heard LED lasts longer so what is the life expectancy of LED TV’s? 25 years? If I’m paying that much it better last at least 25 years!!!
Thanks a lot, … Thanks a lot, recently bought a new led screen laptop and now understand on what I’ve payed an extra money . I confused it with the OLED (when was buying it) so thanks for explaining the differences.
It’s very hard to … It’s very hard to produce a pure white backlight (CCFL or LED). Sony uses a special phosphor-coated WCG-CCFL backlight which helps (produces around 90% of the NTSC gamut vs. 70% with conventional lighting). While I can’t speak specifically about other companies, most colour “enhancement” is done with software – making colours more ‘vivid’ but less ‘accurate’. Compare skin tones on Sony and other TVs to see how this affects picture quality for yourself.
is sony the only … is sony the only company that makes pure white light off of their CCFL tubes? because the video makes it seem like everyone else uses yellow light, which i imagine isnt actually the case.
Thanks for your … Thanks for your comment… although I’m not sure what else you would like explained – next time, perhaps leave a question and we’ll try to get it answered for you.
