If your dad watches allot of sports then get him a 42" Plasma tv from Panasonic. A 720P is fine, due to you can't see the difference between 720P and 1080P in screen size small than a 46". You don't have to worry about blur motion with this tv. Plasma also has the best picture quality of all tvs. If you get an LCD or LED you will need to get the 120HZ or 240HZ to reduce the blur motion and they come at a higher price. Go online to Home Theater Magazine, they reviewed the Panasonic 42" Plasma and compared it to a Sony, LG, Toshiba and Vizio LCD tv. The Panasonic was the top choice and no adjustment required out of the box and the only one that was a THX certified. Also will see that Panasonic was in every price category as the best tv in the entry, mid range and high end. Sony and Samsung only in one category while the rest like, LG, Sharp, Sanyo, Vizio, Element did not even get mentioned. Plasma is also less expensive than the size size LCD or LED tvs. I would go to Costco, they offer you a 90 days return policy and an extra year of factory warranty. Hope this will help you out.
References :
I just saw the Black Friday ad from Wal-Mart and they're having deals on a few tv's. The biggest deal is an Emerson 32" LCD for $248. My parents have the exact same tv, only they didn't pay that little for it. It's a nice tv, great value! The Emerson 42" is also on sale for $448 from 5-11 am only as an "early bird special." There are also other brands on sale, but I don't know how much you're looking to spend....
References :
Wal-Mart, personal experience...
